Morning sickness is a pretty common issue in pregnancy. While not everyone will experience it, 80% of moms do to some degree.
Morning is also pretty common, but the nausea (and sometimes vomiting) can strike at any time of the day or night. Some mom's experience very little distress, others are down for the count from as early as 4 weeks.
You've likely tried all the commonly shared tips...
eating small, frequent meals
eat healthy snacks between meals
for a sour stomach eat sour candies or citrus fruits
avoid food triggers such as spicy, greasy, fatty foods
Increase your protein intake
"drink for 2" and stay well hydrated with water+lemon, ginger ale, herbal tea, etc
Stay upright! Lying down within an hour or 2 of a meal can cause a rise in the level of gastric juices triggering indigestion and nausea
Don't brush your teeth immediately following a meal. Wait at least 30 mins to avoid triggering the gag reflex
Steer clear of strong odors and search out soothing scents like ginger, chamomile, lemon, orange, and peppermint. Just a whiff from your soothing essential oil bottle can make a world of difference,
Motion sickness bands such as SeaBand apply pressure to the P6, or nei guan point, to relieve that queasy feeling. YOu can also apply pressure with your fingers...place 3 fingers on your wrist just below your index finger
There are also several homeopathic remedies that may offer some relief...
Aethusa when there is the inability to hold any food down; vomiting that is spasmodic and projectile
Anacardium when things are worse before or after eating but are relieved during eating
Cactus nausea that lasts all day
Carduus Marianus has intense stomach pressure similar to being colicky, with vomiting
Colchicum when nausea/vomiting is due to increased sensitivity to food odors
Conium when heartburn is involved, especially when lying down at night
Ferrum Phos when the nausea includes constipation and seems triggered by normal iron pills
Ipecac when the nausea is unrelieved by vomiting
Nat Mur when vomiting includes a frothy, watery mucus
Sepia has a sensation of a lum in the stomach, especially after eating; vomiting after eatiing
Many health food stores now carry homeopathic remedies or you can purchase them online thru Amazon, Boiron, etc. These are used for ACUTE issues and are best suited to a 30c potency.
Some general rules of thumb when handling homeopathics include:
never opening them in the presence of strong odors
do not place pellets in your hand (dose from the bottle cap and avoid touching them directly)
do not eat or drink 15-30 mins before or after a remedy is given
always success the bottle 3 times for sensitive people or 10-12 times for non-sensitive people before dispensing each dose
DOSING PELLETS can be done as 1-3 pellets, given every 15-30 mins for 3 doses, then decrease to giving every 1-3 hrs until symptoms are improved. May repeat if symptoms return later.
WATER DOSING is helpful for large families and those preserving their remedies...simply dispense 3-4 pellets into a 20 oz bottle of water and success to dissolve. Label with remedy name and potency and store in the refrigerator. For each dose given, success bottle 3-8 times and dose out 1 tsp (children) or 1 TBS (adults). The bottle will last up to 1 week in the fridge.
